Can William 'Dock' Walls Fill Bobby Rush's Shoes?

Summary

Anyone who's met Walls knows he's engaging, bright and articulate. He is probably best known for serving as one of the late Mayor Harold Washington's top aides-a good start to go after a city council seat, but hardly what it takes to unseat someone who has been serving in Washington for 16 years, and is deemed effective by his constituents.

While Walls can be considered a household name, it's not one voters seem to recognize readily at the ballot box. Last February, in an ill-fated run for mayor of Chicago; not only did Walls finish third in a three-person race, he failed to garner 2,600 votes in any ward. He didn't muster sufficient signature to get on the ballot in '93 in an embarrassing bid for the city clerk's office.

Maybe Walls envisions himself as a Goliath slayer, but his track record is proof the outcome doesn't match the desire. He managed to get only 8.8 percent of the 465,000 votes Chicagoans cast in the last mayoral election. It's enigmatic why someone who's never held office would take on iconic incumbents such as Mayor Richard M. Daley and now [Bobby Rush].
