Surprise Vote Repeals County Sales Tax Increase, Stroger to Veto

"This is mostly political," [Todd Stroger] said of the vote, conceding that the repeal was likely more against him, personally, than an altruistic move by commissioners on behalf of their constituents.

"Commissioners have made a lot of noise about the changes they want to see, but they haven't made any real proposals," Stroger told the Defender.

With the loss, there will be "a lot of things the county does now that we won't be able to do," Stroger explained.

"People had their different reasons for voting in support (of the repeal)," Stroger said. Since it was imposed, the sales tax has been a source of contention for Stroger's administration, with opposing commissioners and legislators playing the sales tax card at-will.
