Summary
As promised, I'm putting together a Black History Month edition of Steppin' Out. The events below are indeed Black history month-centric and focus primarily on the occasion. We've had a sudden burst of really nice weather and are back to 30 degrees. Now, I agree that it's more pleasant out there but I've seen some people walk around with just a shirt. Come on, it's nice, but not THAT nice. At any rate, hopefully the slight temperature change and the sunshine improved your mood as much as it did mine.
St. Sabina recently bought Winnie Mandela, Nelson Mandela's ex-wife, also a politico in South Africa. The newest speaker presented by St. Sabina's Speakers Series is Cicely Tyson. Tyson is a Harlem-born multiaward winning actress who was most recently seen in Madea's Family Reunion and Diary of a Mad Black Woman, but is mostly known for her tour de force performance in Roots. Tyson was also honored in 2005 by Oprah Winfrey at her Legends Ball. Tyson will appear tonight at 7:30pm at the church, 1210 W. 78th Pl. Tickets are $10 at the door. In celebration of her Oscar nomination, WVON-AM/1690's Evening of Dreams Oscar Night Event is putting together a reception in her honor and support. The evening will include portions of the Oscar ceremony and screenings of scenes from Dreamgirk. The party will be at the Harold Washington Cultural Center, 4701 S. King Dr., starting at 6 p.m..
