Summary


The stamp, designed by a New York state artist depicts a young African American mother kissing her baby under the inscription "Test Early for Sickle Cell."

Right now, none of the proceeds from the sale of the sickle cell stamp go to research for a cure. But [Kelvin Mack] told the Chicago Defender that if enough people lobby the U.S. Congress, it could achieve "semi-postal" status, like the one for breast cancer awareness.

"I believe a groundswell of support is what it would take," he said. "Everyone should write the congressmen, not e-mail, but write, and use this new stamp."
