"People aren't quite aware of the deadline yet," said Thanh Lu, coordinator of the Make Medicare Work coalition, which has been conducting education and outreach regarding the drug benefit. "Some people are so confused they don't know what to do - it's a complicated program because they have to pick plans."

"We're spread pretty thin with all the events we're hosting," said Illinois Department on Aging spokeswoman January Smith. "It's an overwhelming amount of information that the government is sending to these folks."

"This plan has failed because it was twisted ... to put drug and insurance companies first and not seniors," said Syd Bild, Health Committee Chair for the advocacy group. "It's a disaster drug plan."
