Harvey School Board Fires Gun Wielding Principal

Summary

The decision to fire Belle was led by board president Gloria Johnson, George Robinson, Tyrome Rogers, and James Thigpen. Their actions clearly demonstrated a great resolve for the safety and protection of the children. Those voting against termination were Donald Nesbitt, Chester Lesure, and Linda Hawkins. None of the three, including Belle, returned telephone calls from the Defender seeking comment.

"I believe that we did the right thing to terminate Belle, particularly with the gun incident. The evidence was overwhelming; he and his lawyer had every opportunity to present their case," the source said. "Yes, I was afraid, but I could not let those kids down. If they are mad at me for protecting the kids, that's tough. There are 3,600 children and eight schools in the district. It's a big responsibility."

Bridges tried to help Belle salvage his career by reassigning him to teach seventh grade science. However, it was later discovered that Belle did not even qualify to teach at that level. The board determined that Belle was not qualified to hold any available teaching position in the school district and falsified his application for the job when he initially applied.
