While the number of Black elected officials nationwide may number more than 9,000, there are very few African American officeholders elected statewide. Running on such a wide scale is difficult because you have to appeal to a wide variety of voters, and race will come into play, whether the candidate likes it or not.
Despite Chicago native Deval Patrick being the only African American candidate to win a statewide race - he is the governorelect of Massachusetts - candidates Harold Ford Jr. (Tennessee); Michael Steele (Maryland); Ken Blackwell (Ohio); and Lynn Swann (Pennsylvania), were all able to get through the primary season and state their case as to why they should be elected.See the full content of this document
