Democrats Must Now Show They Have What It Takes to Lead

While the number of Black elected officials nationwide may number more than 9,000, there are very few African American officeholders elected statewide. Running on such a wide scale is difficult because you have to appeal to a wide variety of voters, and race will come into play, whether the candidate likes it or not.

Despite Chicago native Deval Patrick being the only African American candidate to win a statewide race - he is the governorelect of Massachusetts - candidates Harold Ford Jr. (Tennessee); Michael Steele (Maryland); Ken Blackwell (Ohio); and Lynn Swann (Pennsylvania), were all able to get through the primary season and state their case as to why they should be elected.
