Dcfs: Missing Wards of State Often Run to, Not Away

Summary

"We tend to find that when someone in our custody has run away, they aren't running away from home but to a familiar place. Oftentimes they're running back to be with siblings or other relatives," Kendall Marlowe, spokesman for DCFS, told the Defender.

When a missing persons report about 15-year-old Larita Coleman was sent to the media last month, the teen had been missing from the state's custody -Aunt Martha's Youth Home at 500 1 S. Michigan Ave. - since May. A few days later, a report was sent about 14-year-old Shantease Coleman, Larita 's sister. The younger sister has been missing since November.

According to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services 182 children in the state's custody are still missing from their temporary homes, as of Dec. 28.
