New York Magazine called [Dwight Rhoden] and [Desmond Richardson] "two of the greatest virtuosos ever to emerge from Ailey land."

Richardson became a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 1987 and upon his seven-year completion as the principle" dancer, he toured the world in the same capacity with the Ballet Frankfurt, the Swedish Opera Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Teatro alia Scala and the San Francisco Ballet. He received a Tony Award nomination in 1999 for his performance in the Broadway musical Fosse and was featured in the Oscar winning film Chicago, as well as Patrick Swayze's film Without a Word.

In addition to his involvement with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as the principle dancer, he served in the same role with the Joffrey Ballet, New York City Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.
