Closing the Racial Achievement Gaps On the Sat and Sat Ii

Summary


Typically, college-bound African American students are only half as likely as college-bound white students to take SAT II tests. Last year, only 8.4 percent of African American students who took the regular SAT also took any SAT II tests, compared with 17.3 percent of white students who took both.

The gap between African American and white students in foreign languages is narrower than in all other achievement subjects tested by SAT II. Researchers think that's because more than any other discipline, foreign language study enables African Americans and whites to compete on a level field.

The racial gap on most SAT II tests has expanded recently, as it has on the standard SAT. The gap is widest on the English writing test--the SAT II test that's considered most important in the college-admissions process.
