"It's amazing how we have a lack of minorities involved in the trades, specifically African Americans and Hispanics," Carothers said. "You very eloquently talk about the jobs at Wal-Mart, however, the disparities that exist in the trades are here now and continue. It's time for the unions to make changes and commit to change."

Acuff responded: "The unions have a history of working for equality and workers' rights. It's not fair to blame all the unions for the inequalities."

"If you don't have one, then create it. So many kids are on the corners in the African American community because the union will not step up," he said. "The unions have been asked to take some responsibility and provide African Americans with some opportunities. We want them to come into the community and set-up apprenticeship programs. If they want something, then they must give something."
