These vigils are a great first and empowering step. Folks are collectively telling the thugs "we're tired of it." They're saying to young Black boys "stop and think about what you're about to do."
An important and seemingly underpublicized piece of the puzzle is a gun buyback program administered by the City of Chicago Police Department . It's called "Don't Kill a Dream, Save a Life." In 2006, the department collected more than 400 guns.It's even important to get inoperable guns off the street. The person who suddenly has a gun pressed against his or her back isn't wondering whether the gun is operable.
